Cash Generator's franchise network marks its 10th anniversary this year with a network of stores across the UK. The concept originally debuted in Bolton in 1994, and three years later Cash Generator started its franchising programme, spreading throughout the whole of the UK.
Cash Generator outlets sell new, graded and pre-owned goods. All sorts of items can be bought, ranging from CDs and DVDs through to musical instruments, jewellery, hi-fis and TVs. Additionally, Cash Generator outlets buy items of value from the public (with an option for them to buy the
item back), and also offer cheque-cashing services.
Cash Generator has found a very profitable foothold in Scotland where Jim Devlin (pictured, centre with his staff), franchisee of the Leith branch, has now expanded to open a second store in Edinburgh. Having been in the IT trade for 16 years and taken redundancy from his previous job, Jim felt that he would like to work for himself. The first industry he decided to look into was franchising.
After extensive research, Jim whittled down his choices to a list of 10, and gradually reduced that list to one: Cash Generator. "I looked at Cash Generator in more detail, and I thought to myself 'I can do this'," remembers Jim. "So I got in touch with founder Brian Lewis in the Spring of 2002."
Having made contact, Jim successfully became a Cash Generator franchisee, and began his training programme in August and September 2002 for eight weeks. "It's a very comprehensive training course," he says. "All the aspects of the business are covered and nothing is left out."
That support carried on when Jim officially started at his franchise store. Although he admits that "nothing can prepare you for that first day at work", Jim found that the area manager and support staff offered excellent guidance from the beginning. "They will always be there for you - the support is very good at Cash Generator."
Jim is full of admiration for the Cash Generator franchise, explaining that it's a tried and tested formula. "If you stick with that, then the business should grow and succeed," he adds.
Jim's Edinburgh store is repeating the success of the Leith one - he has gone into partnership with another franchisee Andy Green (who takes care of the personnel side of things).
"You can never get enough of second-hand goods," says Jim. "It never fails to amaze me, the diversity of the products we have in store. It's so interesting, like an Aladdin's Cave, and as a result our customers come back time and
time again."
