Chemex franchise owner earns the Rookie of the Year Award

Told about the Chemex franchise by his accountant, Tim Davies has built a thriving Chemex business

Fed up of working long hours running his private hire business, Tim Davies began looking for a different business opportunity. "I previously owned my own business providing a private car hire service taking customers to airports," Tim remembers. "However, I was tired of working seven days a week and began looking around for something else to do. My accountant had another client who was a Chemex franchise owner and suggested that I look into the franchise."

When Tim began researching into the Chemex franchise opportunity he soon realised that it was the business opportunity that he had been looking for. "Chemex appealed to me because it involves working less hours than my previous business," he recalls. "Also, it is virtually recession-proof and the Chemex brand is a good name within the cleaning industry."

To ensure that Tim was fully prepared to operate his franchise he was provided with two weeks of training at the Chemex head office. He launched his franchise, which he runs with his wife Angela, in June 2008. Since then he has received ongoing support from the Chemex head office. "Chemex provides great support and backup," he reveals. "I have a support manager who sees us regularly. Also there is a full-time chemist at head office who I can contact whenever I need to for advice on the products. In addition to this we have regular meetings and head office has provided a lot of advertising materials."

Founded in 1984, Chemex is a mobile sales and distribution franchise opportunity. Franchise owners sell a range of cleaning and hygiene products to business clients in the hospitality & catering, leisure & healthcare industries. In addition to this franchise owners provide consultancy, training and support to all sectors of industry.

For Tim one of the main benefits of owning a Chemex franchise is that most of his sales are through repeat business. "I have built up a relationship with many of my customers," he explains. "I go to see them from week to week and I find that once new customers start realising how the chemicals work, which is quite quickly, they are happy to buy more."

It was Tim's good relationship with his customers that contributed to him winning the Chemex Rookie of the Year Award in September 2009. "I won the award for having the most retained customers and achieving steady growth," he comments. "It felt great to win the award, especially as I really wasn't expecting to receive it."

Keen to build on his last year turnover of £72,000, Tim is looking to expand his business in the future: "At the moment I want to build my current business to as much as I can and in a few years I want to buy another territory or take on more employees."
