New Chemex franchise is a family affair

Having successfully run a previous franchise together, Bob and Ann Wrigley joined forces with their son-in-law to start Chemex's Grimsby operation

A telephone call to an old friend in the franchising industry led Bob and Ann Wrigley to team up with their son-in-law Andy Carter to launch their Chemex franchise in Grimsby. Bob and Ann entered the franchise world after Bob left the RAF and was looking for business opportunities.

"I had been in the RAF for 29 years and at 47 years old, options for a new career were limited," explains Bob. "The Resettlement officers recommended becoming a franchise owner would be my best choice as it was a proven system. It was at one of the Resettlement courses that I was impressed by Melvin Lusty, who at that time, was Managing Director of the Rainbow International franchise."

After 12 years as owners of a successful Rainbow International franchise, Bob and Ann wanted a change of direction. It was after a call to Ron Hutton, who had also worked with Melvin Lusty at Rainbow International, that Bob discovered that Melvin and Ron were now at the helm of cleaning and hygiene franchise Chemex.

"Having known and enjoyed working with Melvin and Ron before, I decided to investigate becoming a Chemex franchise owner further," says Bob. "I visited the head office and was impressed by the feelgood factor and friendly atmosphere at Chemex so decided that this would be the perfect franchise for Ann and myself."

The couple also wanted to get their son-in-law Andy involved. They selected Chemex as a result of its reputation for products that weren't just highly-effective but recession-proof too. "We sell necessities not luxuries and therefore they are better suited to riding out the recession that has hit the UK," reveals Bob.

After undergoing the Chemex two-week induction course they launched their franchise covering in Grimsby, Brigg, Immingham, Cleethorpes and Louth. The business is currently located at Westwoodside in North Lincs until suitable premises can be found in Grimsby.

"The support from Chemex head office has been superb you just call and there is help at the end of the phone and we have a larger neighbouring franchise owner providing us with invaluable advice," continues Bob. "We had a franchise support manager visit us on a weekly basis to help the launch go smoothly, while head office had arranged the marketing of prospective customers so we had a client base ready."

The trio have set their sights on a target of £350,000 turnover in five years, and then Bob and Ann plan to hand over the reins to Andy when they retire.

Melvin Lusty, Managing Director for Chemex, comments: "Bob, Ann and Andy are an extremely positive addition to the network and I am delighted that they made the decision to join us."
