"I was very impressed by the total professionalism at Chemex"

Having built up a wealth of experience working for other companies, Ray Thomas decided it was time to put himself first and found investing in a Chemex franchise resale will provide the route to his career dreams.

After spending many months researching the best way to become his own boss using a franchise system, Ray Thomas discovered that Chemex kept topping his wish list.

"I had becoming increasingly unhappy about working for a company which specialised in health and safety and personal protection equipment (PPE) and didn't agree with some of their business ideas," explains Ray.

"At 60, I wanted the job satisfaction of working for myself and looked at franchise opportunities in the business to business sector. I contacted quite a few but Chemex stood out as its products were loosely related to PPE and after going to a meeting at the company's head office, I was very impressed by its total professionalism."

Instead of choosing a new territory and building it up from scratch, Ray decided to look at buying an already established territory.

"It meant a higher investment but in return I received a ready-made business including referrals and a company name that was highly regarded in the Swindon area," explains Ray. "As part of my resale due diligence protocol, I contacted the existing franchise owner who supplied me with copies of his paperwork and customer lists.

"I then spent a day with him to find out more about his territory and what I would be investing in. He was more than helpful with this, as he wanted to ensure the business he had built up would be left in good hands before he moved to France.

"During my time being taken around the area and being introduced to my customers, the welcome and reception was brilliant. I was also very lucky that he has agreed to be with me for the first month to help with the handover."

Prior to his April launch, Ray underwent an induction course at Chemex HQ and found it was very comprehensive and provided him with a thorough grounding and training in the company's franchise system.

"The course was second-to-none and I feel very comfortable being a Chemex franchise owner as I know help is just a phone call away," says Ray.

"Another advantage to working with an established brand is that you work closely with the whole Chemex network. This means you also have the back up of other franchise owners, which is very useful when you want to plan holidays or need assistance."

With the help of his wife Tracey looking after the admin side of the business, Ray is planning on increasing the Swindon territory's current turnover of £100,000 to £150,000 by the end of his year. "When I have built the business up to the level I want, I eventually intend to pass my Chemex franchise on to my two sons and be there in an advisory capacity."
