After 20 years as an HGV driver, Bill Paterson decided it was time for a change of direction. Early mornings, long hours and heavy lifting had started to take its toll on his health, but a new start with ChipsAway proved to be exactly the tonic he needed.

“The business seemed perfect for me,” says Bill. “I wanted to work in the automotive sector and I could see the potential to make money. Bill’s biggest fear, before he started, was that he would not have enough work – but he needn’t have worried. It’s already clear that Bill is going to be earning significantly more with his ChipsAway business than in his previous role. However, the best thing about his new business, he says, is the satisfaction of a varied, challenging working day, and a job well done: “Lorry driving can be monotonous and pretty boring, especially when you’ve done it as many years as me. Now I’m getting a real buzz from dealing directly with customers. Every job is different; the only common thing is the delight on people’s faces when they see my work.
