Colin Blunt purchased a ChipsAway franchise in 2001. His sudden death a few months later left his son David on the back foot, unsure of what to do for the best, or what direction to take for the future. As it turned out, his ChipsAway franchise has proved the best possible legacy Colin could have left for his son.

At that time, David was working long hours in an office-based job, which he didn't really enjoy. 'I'm a hands-on sort of a chap really, so I knew the job was only going to be a stop gap,' he says. 'On the other hand, when you've lost a family member it's not necessarily the best time to be contemplating a significant life change like leaving your job and becoming self-employed.'

He recalls that ChipsAway understood the difficulty of his situation, and were exceptionally supportive of him, letting him take his time to decide whether he wished to take on the franchise. 'I was impressed by what I saw and could clearly see the business potential that had convinced my Dad,' he comments. David officially took over the franchise in July 2002 and says he has never looked back. 'It was definitely the right thing to do,' he confirms. 'It's wonderful to be your own boss. It took me a while to get the business established and to get my name out there, but nobody ever suggested that running your own business would be an easy option. To put it simply, I was prepared to work hard and stick at it, and now I'm reaping the benefits.'

Since starting his business, David has had his share of ups and downs. He and his wife lost their first baby, but subsequently have had two children - a little girl of two and baby boy now five months old. 'Throughout it all, it was fantastic to have the flexibility to be around to support my wife - thanks to my ChipsAway franchise - and now of course it allows me time to fully enjoy being a Dad,' he reflects. 'I definitely have the 'life/work balance' sorted out. I'm earning about 25 per cent more than I did as an employee, but work significantly fewer hours, which means I can spend plenty of time with my family. Taking on the ChipsAway franchise was the best decision I ever made - and I owe it all to the foresight of my Dad!'
