My golfing buddy introduced me to the concept of franchising a few years ago, when he was thinking about becoming self-employed. He highlighted the benefits of becoming a franchisee such as access to a tried and tested business model, use of a brand name and ongoing support and training, which really appealed. I had toyed with the idea of working for myself for a few years, so when I was made redundant unexpectedly from my role as a Senior Business and IT Manager in June last year, I decided to take the leap and began looking for a franchise I could invest in.

I wanted a business that would put my strong project management skills to good use and would also incorporate my love of DIY and property. Kitchen facelift franchise Dream Doors ticked all the right boxes because it was voted Brand Builder of the Year last year, combined my interests and skills and had an award winning training programme.

Following a meeting with Dream Doors Managing Director Troy Tappenden and positive discussions with existing franchisees, I signed the franchise agreement and launched my franchise in November 2008, which covers Peterborough and the surrounding area.

So far my experience has been fantastic. From day one I have had training and support, which has included an initial one-week comprehensive training course to refresher financial or outsourced sales courses and ongoing help from my Area Franchise Manager. At present I work from home while I am learning the ropes of the business. By the end of May I hope to have moved into a showroom and by the end of my first year I anticipate my turnover to be in the region of £335,000.

Becoming my own boss has definitely brought out my ambitious side - my long term aim is to continue building up the business, take on a second showroom and within 10 years I hope to become the first Dream Doors franchise owner millionaire!
