FDS South East’s Malcolm Porter talks to Prime Signs Managing Director Steve Taylor about his company’s expansion by franchising plans

Malcolm Porter: How would you describe Primesigns franchise opportunity?

Steve Taylor: Primesigns offers design and print solutions and excellent customer service at extremely competitive prices. Our franchise owners have multiple revenue streams – print design service, sign service, large format printing, small format litho printing, internet café and photocopying service, web design and hosting. We have secured a unique partnership with a leading print house, which allows Primesigns franchise owners to offer excellent quality print work at outstanding value for money.

Malcolm Porter: How long has Primesigns been trading?

Steve Taylor: Primesigns started trading in 1997 and during this time we have fully developed our systems and processes for how to run a successful and profitable business. We opened our latest store in Eastbourne at the beginning on 2010 and by June 2010, turnover was over £10,000 per month and this figure has increased to £20,000 per month by our seventh month of trading.

Malcolm Porter: Describe your target market and the potential for your business across the UK?

Steve Taylor: We target local businesses specifically those that have a high demand for our services. We usually find, due to our processes and systems, that we are able to offer similar or better products and services at a more cost effective price. In addition, Primesigns has produced work for many international brands including Halifax, Spar, AA Group, Eurostar, NatWest and Tesco.

Malcolm Porter: Is your franchise suitable for people who have no previous experience in the print industry?

Steve Taylor: Experience in the printing industry is not required as the franchise owner will receive all of the necessary skills and knowledge through Primesigns’ initial training programme and ongoing support.

Malcolm Porter: What support do you provide?

Steve Taylor: We provide a comprehensive training programme on all aspects of the Primesigns business, from generating business all the way through the design and print process. We spend time with our franchise owners in their location for a period of time once their store is open to make sure that our franchise owners are fully competent and confident in all the key aspects of running a Primesigns business.

Malcolm Porter: What are the most important characteristics you look for in potential franchise owners?

Steve Taylor: Primesigns is looking for hard working, determined individuals who are looking to run a successful design, print and signs business. A background in sales would help but as long as you’re willing to put in the required work, anyone can make a success of a Primesigns franchise.

Malcolm Porter: What is the role of the Primesigns franchise owner?

Steve Taylor: You will be responsible for the day-today running of the business and the selection and recruitment of staff. Key to your team will be a qualified Graphic Designer who will not only be required to create designs but also to spend time with customers to understand their brand and offer relevant design advice and guidance.
