Run a rewarding business with Granite Transformations

Last year Granite Transformations franchise owner Derek Delaney experienced his most successful trading year yet

The recession had a positive effect on business for Bolton-based Granite Transformations franchise owner Derek Delaney, who is now in the process of buying his second showroom in Altrincham. "We had our best year last year," says Derek. "The UK definitely lived up to its reputation as a nation of home improvement fanatics, with more home owners opting to use our service rather than move house."

Established in the UK in 2003, Granite Transformations specialises in creating and fitting kitchen worktops made out of granite, glass, quartz or mosaic surfaces. In just one day, a customer's kitchen can be transformed with minimal mess and disturbance by fitting the new worktop directly over the existing worktop. Other products available include splash backs and shower recesses to floors, walls and a new door replacement programme.

"Before I joined Granite Transformations I was a salesman," reflects Derek. "I have always wanted to be my own boss and run my own business, but at my stage in life, I knew the only way I could achieve success would be through investing in a franchise.

Franchising appealed because as well as having access to ongoing training and support, all of the problems are ironed out for you, which eliminates a lot of the risk of starting up on your own.

"I decided to attend the Manchester Franchise Exhibition for inspiration and the Granite Transformations stand caught my eye, because it was so busy. Eager to find out what the fuss was about, I ventured over and was impressed with what I saw and heard. The Granite Transformations team were very professional, the concept was original and the products were of a very high quality.

"I knew there and then, that Granite Transformations would be the right business venture for me, because I would have limited competition so I could grow the business at a steady pace and I had the option to run a complete business: with a showroom, fitters and my own manufacturing facility. I liked the thought of this because I could keep a close eye on the quality of the finished fitted products."

As part of the franchise package, all franchise owners attend an initial three-week training programme. This covers all aspects of running a Granite Transformations franchise and fast tracks franchise owners through all of the technical, sales, financial and standard operating procedures.

Once completed, Granite Transformations provides franchise owners with ongoing support from the Franchise Advisory and Support Team (FAST). The team has three key members, who are experts in either the sales, operational or technical side of running the business effectively. Their role is to help the franchise owners develop their businesses, either by offering advice over the phone or providing in-field support.

Derek launched his franchise in May 2005 and has gone on to develop a thriving business with help from his wife, Pauline and son Daniel. Pauline is the operations manager for the business, while Daniel is the senior fitter. To date, Derek and his family have two vans on the road and two fitting teams, so they are now able to do two installations a day.

"I love being in control and the fact that I can now call myself a business man. Running a Granite Transformations franchise is rewarding- especially when we receive phone calls and letters from thrilled customers who love how we have transformed their kitchens. I would definitely recommend this franchise to other people who have a background in sales and some experience of managing people."
