GreenThumb: 'Excellent concept'
GreenThumb Business Generation Award winner Eifion Jones tells Rachel Spaul how he plans on growing his business substantially in 2006
Working as an Account Manager with a high street bank for a GreenThumb franchisee, Eifion Jones was ideally placed to gain an insight into the lawn care franchise. With more than 20 million homes in the UK, and a large percentage of those with gardens, he recognised the enormous potential of a GreenThumb franchise. When the opportunity arose to buy that established business in 2002, Eifion rose to the challenge.

By investing in an established business, franchisees literally 'hit the ground running' with existing customers. Eifion inherited 3,200 customers and five employees. Thanks to the flexibility of the GreenThumb initial training programme, Eifion was able to fit basic training around running the business during the winter months.
'Come March, I was glad I'd fitted in as much training as I could, as the business took off,' he remarks.
With almost 20 years of market experience in the UK, GreenThumb provides its franchisees with access to vast industry knowledge. Eifion has since developed the business substantially and currently has 7,000 customers and 12 employees. 'Eifion has had a remarkable year,' Stephen exclaims.
GreenThumb recognised his success at their Annual Conference held recently by awarding him with the Business Generation Award.
Established in 1986, GreenThumb is a nationwide lawn specialist attracting one new customer every minute. Its 'No Scorch Technology', which provides a slow-release lawn treatment over 10-11 weeks, has proved particularly popular and demonstrates the company's commitment to product and service development.
'What people want is a nice green lawn, they don't want weeds and that's the service we've provided over the years,' Stephen explains. Eifion agrees: 'The real evidence that the service works is whether weeds have died - customers give you excellent feedback. I impress on my operatives that we have to look after our customers and do the right job. Based on my success so far, I expect to invoice £750,000 in 2006.'
Franchisees are not expected to have any previous experience in horticulture, gardening or lawn care, but must be business-minded and dedicated to building a substantial business. Stephen concludes: 'If you want to run a lucrative management business, look no further than GreenThumb.'
