RON SAYS: A franchisor should support the franchise owners locally with bespoke advertising. They may also help with the generation of prospects and help target customers in a franchise owner's area with telesales activity, mail shots and leaflet drops.
At Chemex, a new franchise owner who has just completed their induction has access to a dedicated Support Manager for the first three months. The combined objective is to get the business up and running profitably and quickly. Joint sales visits are made and business gained, with the brand getting exposure all the time. The Support Manager also selects 250 businesses within the assigned territory and they are then contacted by the call centre at head office in an attempt to gain sales appointments for the franchise owner.
Any marketing or branding promotion activity undertaken in the territory is done on a 50/50 basis and we produce newsletters that can be individualised by the franchise owner and distributed.
Q. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD FRANCHISE?

ANDREW SAYS: Choosing the right franchise can be a daunting task! My best advice is to select a franchise that is a member of the British Franchise Association (bfa), as the organisation will then need to adhere to a code of ethics and this protects you as a franchise owner.
An established franchise is more likely to have honed best practice and procedures over the years, which will be beneficial when you start up. I would also go for a franchise that provides a high standard of training and ongoing support, which will assist you to overcome the inevitable learning curve.
