Franchise FAQ

HOW WILL A FRANCHISOR HELP TO ESTABLISH THE BRAND IN MY TERRITORY?

Answered by Ron Hutton, Chemex Recruitment Director

RON SAYS: A franchisor should support the franchise owners locally with bespoke advertising. They may also help with the generation of prospects and help target customers in a franchise owner's area with telesales activity, mail shots and leaflet drops.

At Chemex, a new franchise owner who has just completed their induction has access to a dedicated Support Manager for the first three months. The combined objective is to get the business up and running profitably and quickly. Joint sales visits are made and business gained, with the brand getting exposure all the time. The Support Manager also selects 250 businesses within the assigned territory and they are then contacted by the call centre at head office in an attempt to gain sales appointments for the franchise owner.

Any marketing or branding promotion activity undertaken in the territory is done on a 50/50 basis and we produce newsletters that can be individualised by the franchise owner and distributed.

Q. WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD FRANCHISE?

Answered by Andrew Cutler, Card Connection Franchise & Sales Director

ANDREW SAYS: Choosing the right franchise can be a daunting task! My best advice is to select a franchise that is a member of the British Franchise Association (bfa), as the organisation will then need to adhere to a code of ethics and this protects you as a franchise owner.

An established franchise is more likely to have honed best practice and procedures over the years, which will be beneficial when you start up. I would also go for a franchise that provides a high standard of training and ongoing support, which will assist you to overcome the inevitable learning curve.

Lastly, you must love the service or product you are selling! One of the main reasons our franchise owners choose Card Connection is because of the popularity of our greeting card ranges - a popular product makes the sale so much easier!

Q. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF BECOMING A FRANCHISE OWNER OVER A STANDALONE BUSINESS OWNER - ESPECIALLY IN THIS TIME OF ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTY?

Answered by Safeclean Franchise Operations Manager Paul Fennell

PAUL SAYS: A successful franchise provides greater peace of mind, along with a competitive advantage over a non-franchised business, by promoting a working partnership that offers an interested candidate a successful business model with a proven track record. Not only does this lower the risk attached to the initial investment but it is also a great way of being in business for yourself but not by yourself.

Safeclean is part of a multi-million pound global corporation and has successfully guided its franchise owners through a number of financially challenging periods throughout its illustrious 38 year history. Not only does each new franchise owner receive full training and support throughout the lifetime of the partnership they also become part of a dynamic network where each member is committed to continual improvement through developing new products, implementing fresh ideas, the sharing of knowledge and that old chestnut: communication.
