A £70,000 turnover and still expanding

Stunned at winning the London House 2009 Franchisee of the Year Award, Jim Davis continues to go out of his way to help his fellow franchise owners

When Jim Davis was announced as the winner of the London House 2009 Franchisee of the Year Award he was "stunned". "I was looking around the room wondering who was going to be chosen and my name was called out!" Jim remembers.

The year Jim won the award was the first year he had been operating his London House franchise as a full-time business. "I used to work as an accountant, which I continued to do for the first five years of running my London House franchise," he explains. "I initially began looking into franchising as there was a possibility that the company I was working for would be sold and my job would no longer be needed.

"I came across London House and felt that it would be a good opportunity for me because I had dealt with legal and debt recovery in my role as an accountant. Also I wanted something in an industry that I knew about, which fitted my skills and would allow me to start straight away and London House fitted in with this.

"Although I was still working as an accountant when I first started trading in 2004, I had no problems doing both jobs. The Managing Director of the company I previously worked for knew I had started-up my own business so I was able to take London House related calls during the day."

Based in the New Forest, Jim's franchise covers southern Hampshire and parts of southern Dorset and southern Sussex. Prior to launching he went on a two week training course at the London House head office and since then has had ongoing support. "The support has been great," he enthuses. "If there is anything you need they are there. For example, not long ago I wasn't sure on a court procedure and I phoned up head office and was provided with the information I needed that enabled me to complete the job to the satisfaction of my client."

Jim went full-time in January 2009 and he is enjoying being his own boss. "I enjoy being able to pick and choose the hours that I work," he states. "When we had the heavy snow in early January instead of having to struggle into work or risk losing a day's wages I was able to stay and work from home sorting out paperwork."

With a current turnover of £70,000 Jim is planning to develop his business further. "I want to go into the three main towns in my territory and see if local solicitors can use my services," he reveals. "I want to establish my business throughout my territory so that I can bring in more local business."

As well as concentrating on his own business Jim is always willing to help and advise new London House franchise owners. "One of the reasons why I think I won the London House 2009 Franchisee of the Year Award is because if another London House franchise owner, especially if they are new, needs help then I will go out of my way to be helpful."
