About to enter his third year as a Martin & Co property lettings and estate agency specialist, Muhammad Nawaz recalls how he came to be a Martin & Co franchisee with business partners Kamran Khan and Javaid Haq

Why did you choose a Martin & Co franchise?

We set up the business in May 2002 covering the Glasgow South area. We were friends at university and after completing our degrees the idea of running our own business was an attractive option.
After researching franchising, Martin & Co was definitely the Franchisor, the property specialists that provided all the ingredients for starting the business we had been looking for. The Princes Scottish Business Youth Trust assisted with the funding.

What training did Martin & Co provide?

Kamran says two of the success ingredients required are training and support, this is very important to me. Martin & Co clearly has an excellent training programme. The experience of spending time with a mentor in an established office, seeing and living the day to day running of a property lettings business gave me such a buzz. My dedicated Operations Director, who has so much knowledge of the industry, provided me with knowledge of the workings within residential lettings. Along with bags of encouragement, support and guidance he spent the first two days of the Glasgow South office launch going on landlord appointments with me, assisting with tenant enquiries and the office set-up. The highly developed, professional training and ongoing support gave me and the team confidence, business know-how to establish a successful lettings agency and the platform to open an estate agency business in Glasgow South.

How quickly did the business develop?

The first two months involved meeting with potential landlords and 'planting the seeds' for the future. Once we began advertising on the radio, in newspapers and by placing the first Martin & Co 'To Let' boards, the business began to build. By July 2003 we had moved into higher profile premises and revised the business plan to account for the higher footfall. We currently have a turnover of £750,000 and are well on our way to achieving our new targets.

What's your favourite aspect?

Our favourite part of the business is meeting our goals and setting even more targets to reach. We have always given advice to potential Martin & Co franchisees and would certainly recommend this brand to others. Our thinking has always been that the more franchisees there are, the stronger the brand image and the better it is for our own business and for others nationwide.

What are your plans for the future?

We're planning on establishing more Martin & Co offices in the not too distant future.
