Metro Rod, the UK's leading drainage solution provider, has been awarded the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents' (RoSPA) highest award for Occupational Safety in its first year of entry.

The company, which operates with 40 franchisees across the UK, and handles accounts including Hilton Hotels and Lloyds Pharmacy, received the award at the 2006 RoSPA Occupational Safety Awards Ceremony on 10 May in Birmingham.

Gill Walker, Business Services Manager, said: "The award is a fantastic achievement and underlines the importance we place on health & safety in the workplace. We invest a lot in ensuring effective training, support and communication systems are in place to provide all of our team with the knowledge and expertise to operate efficiently and with maximum safety."

To achieve the award Metro Rod demonstrated the highest levels of safety performance, training, assessment and communication within the Water Industry Sector, providing the judges with detailed facts and figures on safety operations over the past five years.

The RoSPA Industry Sector awards are very competitive and recognise organisations that demonstrate the best health and safety management performance within specific industry sectors. Entrants must demonstrate a consistently excellent or continuously improving performance, with the highest standards of health and safety management.

Leading Metro Rod's performance, its Health & Safety forum meets quarterly to review corporate policy, with news and updates communicated throughout the franchise network. Through all operations the company has worked to develop a culture of safety, with regular site and franchise audits, and safety the first issue addressed at new franchisee briefings.

To ensure on-going improvement Metro Rod operates a detailed procedure for reporting any safety issues, while updates in legislation, codes of practice and changes in working techniques are quickly communicated with all personnel. An in-depth training programme covers both theory and practical safety operations, while regular Tool Box talks with UK franchisees ensure two-way feedback.

Mike Walker, Managing Director of Metro Rod, added: "By gaining such a high award in our first year of entry it sends a clear message to our franchisees, clients, partners and potential new colleagues that we provide the highest level of service throughout our operations. Safety combined with service and performance provide the key to our success, and we are delighted that RoSPA has recognised our achievement with such a prestigious award."

Metro Rod provides a full range of drainage services, including drain clearance and pre-planned preventative maintenance programmes. A combination of stringent health & safety standards, highly trained engineers, guaranteed workmanship and customer-focused approach have made the company one of the leaders in the drain care and repair market.
