Minuteman provides a service where every business is a potential customer
The US-based business, named the number one printing franchise by Entrepreneur magazine this year, is seeking dedicated franchisees across the UK to implement its winning concept.
Operating in the UK since 1996, Minuteman Press provides a comprehensive range of printing services, combining the quality of a commercial printer with the ease of an instant printer. This potential was what attracted father and daughter Jonathan and Nicky Durant-Lewis to the business. Attending a franchise show, the pair were impressed with Minuteman's personal approach.
'We found that Minuteman made extra effort to speak to us on a personal basis,' reveals Jonathan. 'This showed us that this was a franchise that would help us to help ourselves.'
Without previous experience in the printing industry, a priority for Jonathan and Nicky was to receive comprehensive training and quality ongoing support. 'It was our first business so we wanted a franchise that would hold our hand in the early stages,' reflects Jonathan.
They were taken on a three-week training course at Minuteman world headquarters in New York and were able to talk to a number of Minuteman franchisees to gain a greater understanding of the business.
Since opening their Bournemouth store in 1996, Jonathan and Nicky have received long-running support. 'A Minuteman representative stayed with us for the first two weeks of trading,' enthuses Jonathan. 'It's never a problem to phone them when we need help and they get back to us straight away. They still occasionally visit to see our latest developments and to impart advice.'
While Minuteman is always on hand to help, the relationship with its franchisees is based upon independence, which was of great importance to Jonathan. Minuteman lets the franchisee run their own business in the way they see best. 'One of the best things about Minuteman is the level of autonomy they have given us,' says Jonathan. 'While we wanted Minuteman's guidance in the beginning, we knew that when established we wanted to do things our way. Minuteman have let us do this and they are still always available for help if we need it.'
A Minuteman franchisee should be 'determined, committed and prepared to put in the hard work,' states Jonathan. 'Marketing skills would be an advantage but most important is your ability to build a rapport with customers. Minuteman will teach everything you need to know about the business itself.'
Adapting Minuteman's marketing programmes to their territory, Jonathan and Nicky have seen increased trade and are looking to grow their business in the near future. Strongly recommending the franchise, Jonathan reveals: 'A Minuteman franchise was a great decision. They have given us everything they promised.'
