"Ovenclean is practically perfect"
A great business model and huge potential marketplace impressed Andy Blackburn into leaving his job as a senior manager to become an Ovenclean franchise owner.
Former engineer Andy Blackburn spent 21 years building his career to become a senior manager, but decided to leave it all behind to join Ovenclean, the UK's leading professional oven cleaning franchise. Tired of working up to 80 hours a week and fed up with management politics, Andy welcomed the opportunity to get back to a practical, hands-on business, but this time with the added benefit of being his own boss!
"Initially I looked at all kinds of franchise opportunities, but so many sectors were struggling in the recession that I discounted quite a few really early in the process," he explains. "Ovenclean, on the other hand, offers a really good business model with a huge potential marketplace and a pretty recession-proof proposition. I liked the nature of the business and in my area there is very little in the way of competition."
Andy attended an open day at Ovenclean's Midlands-based head office, where he was able to find out more about the franchise and chat to existing Ovenclean franchise owners. "Everyone I spoke to was really positive," Andy confirms. "I went back a couple of times to see the management team and really did my homework before making the commitment to invest."
"I certainly have no regrets about my decision," he continues. "I've got my life back. I still work hard and have been really busy since I launched my business last November. In fact I cleaned 140 ovens in the run up to Christmas but now I decide the hours I want to work and I see so much more of my family."
Andy is finding that word-of-mouth recommendations from happy customers are helping his business grow strongly, and says that his ambition in the long term is to build a management franchise, with two or three vehicles on the road.
"My sons are keen to join the business as soon as possible, but first I'm determined to continue to develop my customer base and consolidate the business," he comments.
"I've only been up and running a matter of months, and although things have been great, I feel I need to be operational for at least a year before I'm ready to expand. In the meantime, I'm feeling really positive about the future. I get real satisfaction from what I do and I'm really happy with my new lifestyle!"
Ovenclean is the longest established and most successful domestic oven cleaning franchise in the UK, providing specialist oven cleaning services to a large, virtually untapped marketplace, including not only domestic, but also commercial customers such as schools, lettings agencies and hotels.
