Stop Press. Start Business

It is unquestionably an unusual change of direction, to go from Head of Communications for one of \r\nthe UK’s largest publishing businesses to the owner of a now extremely successful domiciliary care franchise. Gareth Samuel investigates what attracted Tim Haigh to leave his life as a successful PR operative in the City to become the first ever Right at Home UK franchise owner in 2011.

I stumbled across Right at Home UK and saw instantly that it was an excellent business to get involved in.”

When Tim Haigh left his high-flying role as Head of Communications in the City, he was offered many other roles in a similar vein, but wanted to create something of his own. He explains: “I wanted to do something a little bit different and I had experience of Home Care businesses from my publishing days as I had read about them in one of the social care magazines we printed. When I was looking for a franchise, I stumbled across Right at Home UK and saw instantly that it was an excellent business to get involved in.”

In 2011, Right at Home UK was just getting off the ground and had no franchise owners to date. Tim took the leap of faith with the business and became the proud owner of the first ever UK franchise. “I met Ken Deary and really liked him and his vision for the business. I knew Right at Home was already big in the States and knew it was going to be big here too so I signed on to be the first franchise owner and have never looked back.”

The arrangement certainly worked out for both Tim and Right at Home UK, as on the back of the impressive brand’s success, he has built a business which continues to exceed targets and provide high quality care to those who need it. Tim is looking to expand in the next 18 months as his business continues to grow quickly and securely. Right at Home UK too have benefitted from a franchise owner the calibre of Tim’s – it now has 21 franchise locations across the country. Tim adds: “Right at Home has definitely paid off for me. I have not for a second regretted my investment. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I wanted the attention of being one of the first owners, but Right at Home has arguably developed into a even better opportunity now than it ever was for the right person.”

Tim believes, and he is well placed to deliver a well-informed opinion, that an ideal franchise owner for Right at Home must characterise a certain profile. “You have to have a very strong internal drive to succeed and you have to genuinely want to help people says Tim. “A solid business background is also important. You have to be able to manage people and you must be emotionally connected to this business or you will not succeed.”

Right at Home UK is a business with a difference. Customer-led and community focused, hands-on franchise owners like Tim ensure those who need it receive unprecedented levels of care in the comfort of their own home. For Tim, his immediate plans are to expand his business using the “strong relationship” with the Right at Home head office in the knowledge that he is free to develop his business at his own pace, pressure-free. For hundreds of investors looking for a franchise with vision, profit, and a difference, Right at Home UK is an opportunity not to be missed.
