Feeling right at home

Right at Home UK Derby franchise owner, John Houghton, has been in business for six months. In that time, he has made a real difference to the lives of others in his community and built a company that provides the best possible care to those who really need it. Gareth Samuel reports.

plus working capital.

when John opted out of the corporate world, he left behind 80-hour weeks, a long commute and unprecedented levels of stress. Now, as a Right at Home UK franchise owner, his work/life balance is much preferable.

Having been in operation for half a year, he is well placed to advise on what makes a thriving business. He says: “We have built a fantastic reputation for quality and great service in the Derby region. The key to a successful office is getting the right people on your team. With the Right at Home systems and policies in place, the office operations run themselves. This leaves time to ensure we are delivering quality at all times and to look for new business opportunities and growth.”

John is revelling in the challenge of being his own boss, but it is the difference he makes to the lives of others that really makes the difference. He adds: “The importance of quality and the difference it can make to a person’s life is far more important than I had previously expected. With my corporate and operational experience behind me, I had no concerns about being able to run any business. The training provided by the franchisor quickly removed any concerns I had about lack of care experience. It is surprising how much I have learnt in a short period of time.“

Often, opening a completely independent business can hold a certain appeal for entrepreneurs, but for John, choosing a Right at Home UK franchise has reaped rich reward. He explains: “It is fair to say that we wouldn’t have been able to get through the initial CQC inspection if it wasn’t for the franchisor team. In addition to the regular webinars, weekly performance calls and conferences, I have relied on the franchisors office to be at the other end of the phone whenever I need them.”

As with any new business, there are always challenges facing John. He says: “The biggest unique challenge to our business is matching the right carer to the customer. Our care assistants do more than provide personal care, medication, meal preparation etc. Ultimately, it is our free-of-charge introduction to their proposed carer, prior to commencing support, and the guarantee of continuity of carer that makes such a difference to the individual.”

Right at Home UK support their franchise owners through the entire process of launching their new enterprise ensuring its as successful as possible with a collaborative approach. John’s work, therefore, is never dull. He concludes: “While there is no such thing as a nine-five job for a business owner, as I will often clear emails, write blogs, do social media etc. into the evening, the work/life balance and overall hours spent are significantly more controlled than the 80-90 hours I was doing in the corporate world. I have to say, the 10-15 minute commute into the office is a dream.”

John is looking forward to helping more people in his community in his new calling as one of Right at Home UK’s high-flying business partners.
