The sandwich chain, which has already overtaken the number of McDonald's stores in the US and expects to overtake McDonald's in the UK before 2009, puts its success down to the increasing popularity of the SUB® sandwich as a fresh and healthy fast food offering. The store opening follows both staff and passenger demand for a wider choice of fresh healthy food.

Sue Pasco, the 500th store owner, comments: 'It's very exciting to be part of the expansion at Bristol International Airport as well as reaching the 500th store mark. The SUBWAY® chain has experienced phenomenal growth in the UK and Ireland in recent months. As the world's largest sandwich franchise, with more than 23,000 restaurants in over 80 countries, the brand is also recognisable and trusted for international visitors using the airport.'

Across the UK and Ireland, the SUBWAY® chain plans to open a further 1,500 outlets over the next six years, creating a further 15,000 jobs with an investment of over £150 million.
