McDonald’s has named its new CEO as Don Thompson, following the retirement of its previous CEO, Jim Skinner.

Skinner, who became CEO in 2004, is widely credited with the fast food giant’s comeback after the brand was tarnished with the controversy surrounding its unhealthy meals and super size options.

In a statement, Skinner said: “Doing what’s right for our customers and our business has driven my passion as CEO of McDonald’s. I’m honoured to have served and earned the trust of the Board, our shareholders, franchisees, suppliers and the men and women of this great company.”

Thompson had been expected to takeover the role for a number of years and according to Skinner, he is “well prepared” for the position of CEO
