Hundreds of Cornish residents, clearing up following November’s floods, have received a helping hand from Chemex. Rob Montgomerie, the brand’s franchise owner for West Cornwall, donated more than a tonne of anti-bacterial cleaner, which will be distributed through aid centres in the worst hit areas of Lostwithiel, Mevagissey, St Austell and St Blazey.

Montgomerie said the products were a small gesture to help people who had seen their houses and businesses wrecked following the floods, which reached 6ft deep in some areas.

“The news footage clearly showed the destruction caused by the floods, with many people left homeless and thousands facing a massive clean-up operation,” he said.

“Everyone at Chemex wanted to help and the most obvious way was to offer free cleaning products to as many people as possible who have been affected by the floods.”

Montgomerie, who is based in Helston, added that the impact of the floods could be seen clearly throughout the the county.

“The floods and the resulting river sediment have caused extensive damage, from road closures to clean up crews literally having to dig their way into people’s houses,” he added.

“When people can get back into their homes and businesses, the first job will be making sure that their property is safe and clean and I hope our products will be useful in doing that. We will also be offering free advice and site surveys to any businesses who want to ensure its premises are clean and ready to open.”
