Stephen Waring, founder and Chief Executive of leading lawn care franchise GreenThumb, was named Businessperson of the Year at the Wales Achievements Awards.

Waring was feted by 250 of the region’s finest industry talents, politicians and other dignitaries – the ceremony was hosted by BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen at Venue Cymru, Llandudno.

Waring was honoured for his phenomenal success with GreenThumb, which has an annual turnover of more than £60 million and his new, innovative business, Monolith UK which aims to revolutionise the construction industry.

Speaking at the ceremony, organised by the Daily Post newspaper, Waring, whose companies are based on St Asaph Business Park in Denbighshire, said: "I am not a great one for accolades but this is fantastic.

“There is a marvellous opportunity, even in the current economic climate, for entrepreneurial spirit and I think we’ve seen a reflection of that here tonight.

“It’s nice to see people want to create a much better environment and you can see there is an opportunity to grow a dynamic business in North Wales.”

Thanking his staff, he said: “I’ll continue pushing the businesses in 2013, though they’re both very separate.

“I’ve always been very well catered for by a fabulous team. If you have the right people behind you don't have to work morning, noon and night."

Today, there are around 220 GreenThumb franchises across much of the UK, but Waring is convinced there is huge potential for further growth.
