Subway has retained its title as the UK's number one sandwich seller. A report published by the British Sandwich Association has revealed that the Subway chain has once again hit the number one spot in the UK for sandwich sales.

According to the report, despite uncertain economic conditions the Subway chain has continued to open new stores across the UK and Ireland, with its sales accounting for 60 per cent of total sales in the entire sandwich bar market.

Subway's Area Development Manager, Trevor Haynes, said: "We are delighted to have once again been ranked number one in the British Sandwich Association report. We are very proud of the strength of the company's brand, and being recognised as the market leader shows that our customers appreciate our great offering and are returning time and again."

The report reveals that the sandwich market has maintained strong growth over the past year, despite difficult economic conditions countrywide. The past year has also seen further diversification in the location of sandwich outlets, with schools, hospitals and many other institutions finding sandwiches are a popular and healthy option.

Haynes added: "This is a trend we are seeing more and more, as demand increases for healthy, varied options to be readily available. We pride ourselves on being able to offer our customers great tasting Sub sandwiches, made just the way they want, fresh in front of them. It's all about offering choice - we have an increasingly wide range of Subs from indulgent to low fat to great value - which is why we are still able to record great sales."
