At the bfa annual conference Nigel spoke about the constant need to raise awareness of franchising throughout business, consumer, academic and governmental areas. He also highlighted the fact that the franchising sector generates over £10 billion a year and employs 371,000 people in 34,000 franchise units across the UK. Additionally Nigel pointed out the need for many universities to do more to educate students about franchising.

'With a few exceptions, notably the universities of Lancaster, Middlesex, Stirling, Surrey and Westminster, and one or two others, the understanding, promotion and teaching of franchising as a legitimate and successful business model is paltry,' said Nigel. ''Proud to Franchise' is founded on the idea that franchisees will promote themselves as franchise owners delivering to their customers all of the care and commitment of a small business combined with the brand quality, service development, resources and buying power of a big business.'
