Since 2005, CoLaz has revolutionised the beauty industry through their innovative laser hair removal techniques. Now, with four salons currently in operation, the owners are giving investors the chance to share in their success. Gareth Samuel reviews one of the most exciting new franchise opportunities on the market.

CoLaz (pronounced Co-Lase) is a new beauty franchise offering that comes with experienced advice, a formidable online presence and a distinguished brand as part of the package. The company specialises in laser hair removal but also provides a range of beauty therapies including skin and slimming treatments.

The seeds of the CoLaz brand were planted when founder Manroop Ahitan set up her first salon in Southall, West London, under the company name M G Beauty Ltd in 2005. She realised that the results of many hair removal products, that were popular at the time, were substandard.

With the salon in place, she invested time and money into extensive market research, before purchasing cutting edge laser removal machines.

Manroop says: “I opened up with just one salon and offered more traditional beauty treatments, but as the demand for more effective methods grew, I invested in medical graded laser machines. The business just grew from then onwards.” In 2010, Manroop’s husband, Surrinder Ahitan, joined the venture and with him, brought marketing skills and web knowhow to the business.

These developments proved to be the catalysts for a name change and years of rapid growth into the thriving technology driven beauty business – with four separate locations – that CoLaz is today.

Manroop adds: “There is a massive market for laser hair removal as more and more people want to see more permanent, or longer lasting, effects. Demand is just going to increase from now on.”

CoLaz has come along way from its humble beginnings and is now a highly lucrative brand. With its state-of-the-art bespoke bookings software and four salons in the West London/Berkshire area, the firm turns a combined total in excess of £1m per year.

Now, after seven years of prolonged success, Manroop and Surrinder have decided to expand through franchising – giving potential investors the chance to buy into a modern company with a proven business model. Surrinder comments: “We think that franchising is the best way to expand our business, with dedicated franchise owners investing in their own businesses, I believe we could grow significantly across the UK. New Franchise Owners would be taking on a management role as opposed to a hands-on role in the salons.”

Manroop continues: “It would be a slight advantage to have a background or at least an interest in beauty therapy, but it is not a necessity at all. We have some very successful managers who are not qualified to use the machines but employ nurses or beauticians who are.”

The company philosophy is a noble one; it simply states that CoLaz sets out “To enable people to achieve their aim of feeling sexy, smooth and confident” – a manifesto that has struck a chord with modern audiences, as customers return time after time for the excellent service and friendly welcome that CoLaz provides.

Manroop says: “For me, the best part of the job is that it’s flexible. I now have time to pick the kids up from school and do what I want to do.

“When I was working more in the salons, it was quite enjoyable too, getting to know customers. You end up becoming friends with many of them as you help build their confidence through the treatments. Customer loyalty is very good usually.” Investing in a CoLaz franchise entails a comprehensive three-week residential and salon training programme. This includes learning beauty therapy techniques, as well as marketing and operational practices that will give franchise owners the best possible start to their new careers.

New franchise owners will benefit from a unique launch programme, a full marketing package and assisted site selection to get the most out of their new businesses. On top of this, investors will get access to CoLaz’s dynamic website, which is constantly updated by Surrinder.

“When most people search online, they don’t search for what they want to buy, they search for their problem. Our website generates a lot of leads this way,” Surrinder adds. “There are over 800 pages on our site. I spend most of my time updating it and marketing the brand through newspaper and text adverts and online.

“Part of my job is management training. I listen to voice calls to our receptionists and if the call was not converted into a sale, I sit down and work out why it was not converted and how we can improve.”

Since 2010, when Surrinder applied his expertise to the business, the website has become a core source of business activity for the brand. Franchise owners who invest in the brand will be able to take full advantage of the wealth of enquiries made through the site.

As well as running CoLaz, Manroop operates two certified training centres for beauty therapists, which trade as separate businesses – Beaulaz. The centres offer students the chance to achieve an NVQ up to level four in laser hair removal, qualifications that are now compulsory to carry out the treatments.

As part of the franchise investment package, BeauLaz courses will be made available to new franchise owners and staff for 50 per cent of the usual cost.

In addition to hair removal, the company offer an extensive range of other beauty therapies, including body shaping and LED light therapy – CoLaz offers some of the most advanced cosmetic treatments on the market and even produces its own beauty products.

The brand is looking for the right people to become their first franchise owners. If you have the sales ability to represent and market the CoLaz brand, an interest in the health and beauty sector and an affinity for working with people, then the revolutionary beauty therapy franchise could be the quickest way to make your fortune and improve people’s lives.
