DYNO: The franchise with a winning pedigree

There's not many franchisors that can claim to be a 'household name' or boast over 40 years of experience and the backing of a leading service organisation. Rachel Spaul explores the management opportunities offered by Dyno Group

A founding member of the British Franchise Association and one of the first businesses to be franchised in the UK, Dyno-Rod is reported to be recognised by three-quarters of the UK adult population. From its foundation in 1963, Dyno-Rod has grown into a complementary fleet of 24-hour property care services under the Dyno Group brand. Part of Centrica, the company has the backing and resources of a major service organisation - British Gas.

'Fair prices', 'fast performance' and 'professionalism' are the core principles driving the two divisions of Dyno Group: Dyno-Rod, drain maintenance or emergency plumbing, and Dyno-Secure, locksmith and security installation/service. The markets in which Dyno operates are traditionally characterised by poor service levels and a large number of smaller, local operators. 'To exploit this gap in the market, franchisees have the support of the trusted Dyno brand,' comments Clive Smith, Operational Development Manager. 'In addition, our association with British Gas brings a whole new world of exciting opportunities that we are well placed to capitalise on.'

An established brand & household name

The company's extensive track record and success in the industry is what attracted Ken Lewin to the Dyno-Rod Plumbing services opportunity.

Dyno-Rod Plumbing is a multi-van business that provides a professional 24-hour emergency plumbing repair and installation service to domestic and commercial customers, including: burst and leaking pipework; washing machine and dishwasher installations; and repair of ball valves, water tanks and cisterns. Experience as a plumber, however, is not a pre-requisite for becoming a franchisee.

Ken clarifies: 'I was previously a Regional Support Manager for a construction equipment dealership. The business was restructuring so I decided to look for a franchise in a more secure industry. I chose plumbing because I have a natural aptitude for physical work with a practical and managerial background. I chose Dyno because it is already a successful household name.'

All Dyno franchisees receive training from approved technical training providers in using the IT systems, customer service policies and techniques, marketing tactics and the various technical aspects of the work and business. Further in-field training from experienced professionals covers hands-on business management. 'The training was balanced and tailored to suit my needs,' Ken endorses.

From his first week in February 2005, Ken's Basingstoke-based business got off to a great start with regular account customers from insurance and housing associations, and domestic customers through Yellow Pages and local advertising. 'We're very busy and the bank manager is very pleased,' he adds. 'We've done better than expected with a net monthly turnover of £20,000.'

Years of experience backed by a modern outlook

Chris Bingham's own experience of being locked out of his house late at night and being charged a high fee to be let in prompted him to invest in a Dyno-Locks franchise when he closed his IT recruitment agency in 2002.

Dyno-Locks has now evolved into Dyno-Secure to meet the growing need for a fully resourced mobile security repair and installation service. Franchisees provide a fully inclusive security service for homes and business premises including emergency locksmithing, security surveys, burglar alarm installation, video entry systems and all access control systems.

'My business got off to an almost immediate start turning over £10,000 a month, by month two,' Chris reveals. 'Since British Gas took over I'm expanding more into the security side of things such as alarms and CCTV. In the short term I foresee being more office based with full-time employees. Dyno has years of experience, which is now being backed up by a modern outlook on business. Dyno are open-minded and willing to listen to ideas.'

Freedom to succeed

Dyno creates the freedom to succeed by providing training and plentiful ongoing support for franchisees via telephone, business development programmes, online and hands-on support from an Area Manager. Ongoing marketing support, national advertising, PR and sales support material are also available. Key Accounts Sales and Quality Assurance Accreditation are all part of the package. Out of hours call handling is also provided.

Franchise opportunities exist throughout the UK for Dyno-Rod Plumbing and Dyno-Secure. Dyno-Rod -cleaning, inspection and refurbishment of drain, sewer and pipework systems - is an established brand offering limited re-sale opportunities. 'As a Dyno franchisee you will need to have a broad range of commercial skills,' Clive furthers. 'Managing a Dyno franchise requires the application of expertise in disciplines such as leadership, staff motivation, financial control, administration, marketing and communication.'

Speaking from his own experiences, Chris adds: 'You need a lot of energy, you need to be good at problem solving, and posses business acumen.'

Dyno seeks determined, ambitious and enterprising people who will effectively exploit the potential that the Dyno brand and franchise format offers. Call Dyno today to discover what opportunities are available where you live.
