Franchisees achieve outstanding growth

Andy Rogers had been looking for a business opportunity for nearly a decade when he discovered GreenThumb almost by accident

Unable to find anyone to treat the lawn at his home in the Fens, Andrew recognised a gap in the market immediately. So he and his friend David Harris invested in a GreenThumb franchise, based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire and covering Fenland and Ely.

Andrew says: 'I have a strong interest in gardening so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I looked at other franchises in the sector but GreenThumb presented the best package. GreenThumb has a strong brand, great support and a national network which means GreenThumb franchisees can benefit from customer referrals anywhere in the country.'

By spring 2007 they had quit their jobs - Andrew worked in TV and David in the travel trade - undergone the GreenThumb training programme and set-up their headquarters in Whaplode Drove on the Lincolnshire-Cambridge border just outside Wisbech. Armed with GreenThumb's tried-and-tested marketing plan, they started work last March with 14 customers handed over by franchisees in neighbouring territories.

A year later business is going so well, having taken on over 400 new customers, that they have employed their first staff member, lawn technician Andrew Blackhurst. Andrew will carry out the four pre-scheduled weed and fertiliser treatments that GreenThumb apply to all their customers' lawns during the growing season between March and autumn, along with the winter treatments of Scarifying and Aeration. They are also taking the next major step in their development of a multi-van operation - investing in another Mercedes van to meet demand from customers who pay from £14 a treatment to keep their lawns looking healthy, green and weed-free.

Founded over 20 years ago, GreenThumb now has nearly 180 franchisees throughout the UK. There are between 60 and 70 virgin territories left for sale - with re-sale opportunities at varying investment levels and locations nationwide. Halifax, Newry and Yeovil, along with a re-sale in Poole, Dorset were new in February 2008 to add to Bourne, Brighton, Chigwell and Eastbourne in January.

David Harris and Andrew Rogers are delighted they made the investment and their first year's trading has outpaced the projections in their business plan.
Andrew says: 'The success of this last year coupled with the positive reactions from hundreds of our delighted customers has encouraged us to expand our service and we are aiming to double our customer numbers by this Summer.'

David adds: 'We pride ourselves on our service to our customers - no one likes to be kept waiting. We aim to be on your lawn at the time we state. Even if we are 10-15 minutes off our scheduled time we'll call you so you are not left wondering. It's the little things like that make the difference. Our aim is total customer satisfaction both in our treatments, service and results. We believe this dedication to service will help maintain business growth again this year.'
