Spread some Christmas spirit with The Christmas Decorators
After a fantastic 2011, Nick Bolton, founder of The Christmas Decorators, reveals how his franchise owners are looking forward to an even more successful 2012.
The Christmas Decorators is set to pass an important landmark as it enters its fourth year of franchising. The 10 new franchise licences to be issued this year will allow this fast-growing franchise to offer its services to more than 50 per cent of the UK population.
So, how are existing The Christmas Decorators franchise owners performing, especially during times of austerity? In 2011 Trevor Grinsted set up his Essex franchise and flew past his ambitious first-year target of £37,000. After two weeks of initial training, Trevor prepared his first proposals and sales appointments with head office support, and hit the ground running.
His highlight was providing the lighting for the McDonald’s Christmas TV advertising campaign. Within six weeks, he had made just under £60,000 in sales – a figure he hopes to double next Christmas.
Alison Hughes also had a great first Christmas, including acquiring such high-profile clients as Alton Towers and Bentley Motors. Her innate talent combined with The Christmas Decorators’ proven decorating techniques won her many multi-year contracts that will see her turnover snowball in coming years.
Maurice Kelleher, The Christmas Decorators Franchise Manager, explains: “The beauty of this business is that, as you are taking down all your decorations at the end of your first Christmas, you know exactly what your earnings starting point will be for year two.”
Marcus Dunn, who operates The Christmas Decorators in Surrey, turned over an impressive £210,000 in his third year, helped largely by repeat installations for existing customers and adding new clients including One Hyde Park, Broadgate Estates and some Premier League footballers.
While there are companies that provide decorations for big shopping centres and local authorities, The Christmas Decorators is unique in providing high-quality, professional, indoor and outdoor decoration services for commercial and public sector customers, as well as residential customers.
In fact, The Christmas Decorators is the only national Christmas decorating service for individual homes. It is also the only one positioned to take jobs considered too small for the big commercial decorators, such as those in bars, restaurants, golf clubs, health spas and smaller shopping arcades. These customers are likely to spend £1,000 to £10,000 each.
Ged Comerford, of The Christmas Decorators Franchise Support team, says: “The big jobs such as city centres and shopping centres always go out to a lengthy and expensive tender process that typically sees up to five companies all competing for the work. Our clients tend to be the owners of a company who can make a decision there and then and know what they want and what they want to spend on it.”
The aim of the company is to make professional Christmas decorating services as commonplace as those of a cleaner or gardener.
Sarah Bolton, co-founder of The Christmas Decorators, adds: “If you think about it, 10 years ago you needed to be well off to have a house cleaner. Nowadays, if you have a gardener or lawn care company, you often use a cleaner too. A Christmas decorating service can be just as popular. It saves families time and space and can bring a home alive with the magic of Christmas.”
Home decorating services start from as little as £500 and range up to £10,000.
Every The Christmas Decorators franchise will be granted a territory containing around 20,000 homes worth over £850,000 (the target market). Following comprehensive training, franchise owners are helped to develop and implement a marketing plan designed to launch the service within their territory.
Franchise owners continue to benefit from a host of support services from the Liverpool-based head office. This includes two annual conferences and access to unique decorating products at magical prices.
While you might think that The Christmas Decorators is just for Christmas, think again. New revenue streams are being introduced, which will make it feel like Christmas all year round.
