Your Move: Big business builders

Your Move's franchise system enables entrepreneurs and business people with no estate agency experience to run and build their own businesses. Rachel Spaul interviews

Property is big business in the UK. As a Your Move franchisee you can access this lucrative industry supported by an independent estate agency brand with growing nationwide brand recognition.

What's more, you don't need prior experience of the property industry. Peter Everett, Your Move Franchise Development Manager, explains: 'We believe that generic skills learned and developed in other industries are transferable into estate agency such as self-motivation, energy and confidence.'

Business partners Raj Singh and Nigel Comer are typical of the type of franchisees Your Move is looking to appoint. They joined as franchisees in 2004 from a background in consultancy and will soon be opening their second office. Raj recalls: 'We both owned properties and wanted to enter the lettings/estate agency industry but didn't have the experience. We were also aware that the industry was becoming more regulated. Investing in a Your Move franchise gave us access to a wealth of knowledge and professional qualifications.'

They were particularly impressed by the Your Move management information system that would enable them to adopt a managerial role from the start and to open more than one office. 'Our strategy was to multi-branch and to achieve this we needed a management information system to work ourselves out of the business from day one - Your Move was ideal,' Raj explains. 'In estate agency everything is traditionally recorded on cards. With this system everything from calls made to how many viewings were made on one property on a particular day is stored on computer. It is also networked so we can access the information from any office.' All franchisees receive comprehensive training and support from Your Move. This includes access to cutting-edge office and internet technology and a dedicated Account Manager who provides support both prior and post launch.

'With no experience of estate agency it was essential that we had ongoing support,' adds Raj. 'We also have access to a national network of franchisees, which is very useful.' Raj and Nigel believe in the durability of the Your Move system having weathered the worst quarter in estate agency in the last 30 years, as Raj clarifies.

'By the summer of 2005 we had not only recovered substantially but had a pipeline of clients putting us well above the top 10 per cent of all the Your Move franchised branches. We accredit this to good practice and taking on board head office advice.' On target to turn over £360,000 this year, Raj and Nigel aim to open their third office next spring and plan to open smaller satellite offices in the future.
