Subway have long been the largest restaurant chain in terms of numbers, but this year plans to increase that by expanding its massive footprint by seven per cent. The sandwich maker has already achieved about one third of their total goal, opening 973 new stores around the globe since the start of the year.

Subway by the end of 2013 had more than 40,000 locations, which surpasses McDonald’s 35,400 and Starbucks’ 20,000 and Yum’s three brands combined – KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

Subway has gone through rapid growth of the last 10 years and according to Chief Development Officer Don Fertman, the brand has averaged more than 2,000 new spots per year for the past decade. However the last two years has seen this average rise to 2,500 in 2012 and 2,700 in 2013.
