Turner began his career grilling burgers at the very first outlet in Illinois before the chain was bought from the founders.
After taking over from Ray Kroc as chief executive, Turner trebled the number of outlets and opened up dozens of new international markets.
Turner established the McDonald’s Hamburger University, the first of its kind. He was also the co-founder of Ronald McDonald House Charities, which provide accommodation for family members who have sick children in hospital.
Today McDonald’s has more than 34,000 restaurants.
