Franchisee Raj Rao bought into the sandwich giant and created a partnership with Lidl to open his store within the confines of the increasingly popular value supermarket.

Subway's Area Development Manager for the UK and Ireland, Trevor Haynes, said: "The simple operations involved in running a Subway franchise and its convenience to customers makes it a perfect fit for these types of locations. Regarding our new partnership with Lidl, we are excited to see what this could lead to in the future."

The store is 800 square feet in size, and has begun trading on the A148 in the seaside resort of Cromer. This development reflects the franchisor's commitment to opening more non-traditionally located sandwich bars, in places like forecourts, convenient stores, universities and colleges.

The Subway franchise overtook McDonald's as the largest franchise business internationally earlier this year. Subway has nearly 40,000 restaurants worldwide in over 100 countries.
